The Law School of KUST was founded in 1997, which included subjects of Marxism-Leninism, ideology and politics until 2006, offers programs of master’s degree of Law (first level discipline), Juris and 2 majors of doctor’s degree (Environmental planning and administration, Mineral Resource protection and legislation). In 2017, Law School ranked second in Yunnan Province in the fourth round of the law discipline assessment of China and joined in the general undergraduate colleges and universities outstanding talent co-education program of Yunnan Province. In 2018, the first-level discipline of law is included in the list of the proposed cultivation and construction of the doctoral program of Yunnan Province. With years of rapid development, the Law School has gained big influences inside and outside of Yunnan Province.

At present, the Law School has 73 faculty members. 64% of 61 full-time teachers are associate professors and professors. There are 45 master supervisors, 2 doctoral supervisor, 1 member of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Law Society, 15 executive directors of different research associations of the Chinese Law Society, 6 legislative advisers of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Yunnan Province, and 2 legal advisers of the Yunnan government. The undergraduate teacher ratio is about 7:1. The strong faculty supports the teaching, research and social services of the Law School.

The Law School has 8 research centers, a volunteer workstation of legal aid, a moot court, a criminal photography and trace testing laboratory, and a data room. It owns the Yunnan Provincial Institute of Local Legislation which was jointly established with the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Yunnan Province, and the Yunnan Intellectual Property Development Research Institute which was jointly established with the Yunnan Intellectual Property Office. Besides, the Law School established legal theory and practical training bases by signing strategic cooperation agreements with Institute of Applied Law of the Supreme People's Court of China, Yunnan Provincial High People's Court, Yunnan Provincial People's Procuratorate, Kunming Intermediate People's Court, Kunming Municipal People's Procuratorate and some Autonomous Prefectures, Police Departments, law firms. Overseas practical bases are also established under the cooperation between the Tan & Associates Barristers & Solicitors of Canada, Vermont Law School of the United States and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

In recent years, members of the Law School have taken leadership responsibility for   more than 150 research projects, among those there are nearly 20 National Social Science and Fund projects, more than 30 Provincial Fund projects. Over 1700 papers  are published, more than 230 of them are published in domestic core journal of law, included China Law Science, Modern Law Science, Law Review, ZUEL Law journal, Science of Law, Law and Social Development, The Jurist, Law Science Magazine and Criminal Law Review, many of them have been reprinted by Xin hua Wen Zhai and Photocopy of RUC. Besides, there are more than 70 Publications and reference books, and more than 100 various teaching and research rewards.
